Miramón Park is a favourite among locals for its tranquillity. It is the great unknown among our parks, as it hardly appears in tourist guides.
Strolling among the different native trees, one can find picnic areas, a pelota court, an amphitheatre, a farmhouse, a pond… but what usually catches the eye are two neo-Gothic style palaces dating from 1904.
These are the Arbide Towers, which, with more than 100 years of history, were built right in the centre of San Sebastian. In 1972 the towers were sold to a real estate company with the intention of demolishing them to build new buildings. Fortunately, the Caja de Ahorros Municipal decided to save the towers when they realised that it was possible to move them to their current location.
Unlike other buildings in San Sebastian, the Arbide Towers were taken apart stone by stone and the more than 6300 listed pieces were moved. It took more than 5 years to reconstruct the two towers, piece by piece, as if they were a puzzle.
